Apple Sauce Nut Cake

An egg-free version.

From the box of A.D. from Lutz, Florida, by way of Pennsylvania in the 1940s, and originating in Ohio in the 1920s.

Apple Sauce Nut Cake

6 Tbsp. shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup sour apple sauce
2 cups flour
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1 tsp. hot water
1/2 tsp. each ground cloves and cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 cup chopped raisins
3/4 cup chopped walnut meats
1/3 tsp. salt

Stir shortening until creamy and work in sugar; sift flour, salt and spices and add raisins and nut-meats.

Yesterdish suggestion: Try baking in an 8-inch square pan at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.
