Cape Cod Cranberry Nut Bread

Cape cod and cranberries are a classic combination.

In the late 19th century, there was a Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association that combined its harvest for sale through one entity, but the recipe here is most likely referring to a later entity: the Cape Cod Cranberry Company.

Its creation was announced in the December 1, 1904 edition of the Wisconsin Valley Leader (Grand Rapids, Wisconsin):

Cranberry Grower:

A new cranberry company has been organized on the Northern Pacific coast with a capital of $50,000 for the purpose of developing the Chabot marsh, comprising 1800 acres. An association of cranberry growers at South Berwick, Me., with a capital of $350,000, is called the Cape Cod Cranberry Company, of which E.F. Butler is president and treasurer. Another very large cranberry enterprise will develop a marsh of four thousand acres in Burnett County, Wis., about twelve miles from Grantsburg. It is estimated that the cost of developing the land will be considerably over $1,000,000 and the promoters figure on profit of $800 per acre.

The Cape Cod Cranberry Company would come to market, among other things, a canned cranberry sauce under the brand name Ocean Spray starting in 1912.

In 1930, the company merged with A.D. Makepeace Company and a company named Cranberry Products to form an organization called Cranberry Canners. In the 1940s, it expanded to other states and took the name National Cranberry Association.

In the 1950s, Canadian members joined, and the organization changed its name one last time in 1955 to leverage its most famous brand: Ocean Spray.
