Woodland Date Cookies
- 1 cup Spry
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
Combine Spry, salt, soda and vanilla and blend well. Add sugar gradually and cream real well.
- 2 eggs
Add 1 at a time and beat well.
3-1/2 cups sifted flour
5 Tablespoons milk
2 cups dates, putted and cut
3/4 cup nuts, chopped–I use pecans
Add flour alternately with milk mixing thoroughly. Add dates and nuts and blend.
Drop from tip of teaspoon on baking sheet; recipe says grease with Spry. I don’t grease mine but remove the minute I take out of oven.
Then flatten cookies by stamping with a glass covered with damp cloth dipped in dish of white granulated sugar. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees 12 to 15 minutes. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
I have a roll of cheese cloth, cut a piece to fit over flat bottom of glass. Put rubber band on glass to hold in place. Wet my hand under water faucet and whet cheese cloth till wet enough to hold sugar. Don’t need to dampen any more.
