Date Bars
1 c. (2 sticks) butter
2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda [dissolved in] 2 tsp. water
1 (8 oz.) dates, cut up
2 T. sugar
3 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. cinnamon and nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
Dash of salt
1 c. nuts (if you like)
Cream together butter and sugar, beat until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine baking soda and water; beat into creamed mixture. Add dates.
Sift together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt and add gradually to creamed mixture. Add nuts (if you like). Chill several hours.
On lightly floured [board], shape into rolls 10 x 3/4 [inch]. Place two rolls on each buttered cookie sheet. With fingers, flatten to 1/4 [inch] thickness. Sprinkle with sugar or sugar frosting.
Bake 15-18 minutes. While hot make diagonal slices 1-1/2 inches apart.
Bake at 350 deg.
