Burnt Sugar Cake

She means caramelized sugar. Don’t burn sugar. Please, please don’t burn sugar.

A similar recipe appeared in the May 2, 1940 edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Burnt Sugar Cake

Syrup–1 c. sugar burned, take from fire and add 1 c. boiling water.

Cake–

Cream:

  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 3 c. flour
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 1 c. milk or water

Beat 5 minutes, then add

  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • syrup
  • 2 whites of eggs, beaten stiffly

Based on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s recipe, bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes.
