Popular before cream cheese frostings took over in the 1980s.
From a box sold in Nampa, Idaho.
Frosting For Red Velvet Cake
5 Tbsp. regular flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar, granulated
1 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Cook flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly.
Let cool until cold.
Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla.
Add to cold flour mixture; beat until consistency to spread.
When finished, it looks like whipped cream. Beat until it is curly.
This recipe is much nicer than the cream cheese frostings so popular now. Tasty, not too sweet, buttery rich, spreads & looks beautiful and holds up at room temperature well. Good stuff. Like a super rich, extra thick pudding on butter steroids.
I can highly recommend it from personal experience! It is a keeper.
