Baked with a spiced sugar syrup.

Apple Dumplings No. 1
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
2/3 c. milk
8 small apples (pared and cored)
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
2 Tbsp. butter
Sift flour; measure, add baking powder, salt, and sift. Cut shortening until mixture looks like meal. Add milk small amount at a time.
Roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles large enough to enclose a small apple. Place apple on dough and fill with mixture of sugar and cinnamon and dot with butter.
Syrup
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
dash of nutmeg and cinnamon
1-1/3 cups hot water
Pour over apples in pan. Bake 450 deg. for 10 minutes then decrease 400 deg. for 20 minutes.
Makes 8 dumplings.
I made the crust recipe with coconut oil instead shortening. Put the crust crumbles into a glass dish, and my Mom pressed it into place. Baked crust at 400 for 12 minutes. Let it cool and filled it with homemade lemon filling. Served cold. Amazing.
