Orange Kiss-Me Cake

A bake-off winner from 1950.

Wins $25,000 For Her Orange-Kiss-Me Cake

 

The wife of a Redwood City, Calif. baker and a 17-year-old mother of two from Rice Lake, Wis., won the two top prizes in the Pillsbury Mills national bake-off contest in New York today. Mrs. Peter Wuebel won first prize of $25,000 for “orange kiss me cake.”

Mrs. Bernard Derausseau won first prize of $5,000 junior division for a cookie recipe, “cherry winks.”

Orange Kiss-Me Cake

Grind together:
1 large orange, pulp and rind
1 cup raisins
1/3 cup walnuts

Sift together:
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar

Add:
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk

Beat for 2 minutes or 300 strokes until batter is well-blended.

Add:
2 eggs, unbeaten
1/4 cup milk.

Beat for 2 minutes.

Fold orange-raisin mixture into batter. Pour into well-greased and lightly floured pan.

Bake in moderate oven, 350 deg., 40 to 50 minutes.

Drip 1/3 cup orange juice over warm cake. Combine 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 cup walnuts.

    What do you do with the sugar cinnamon and walnuts at the end of the recipe? After you drip juice on warm cake…
