Why a miracle? Because Lever Brothers said so.
Here’s an explanatory advertisement from the October 6, 1950 edition of The Corpus Christi (Texas) Times:
From a box sold in East Moline, Illinois.
Miracle Brownies
3/4 cup sifted all-purpose flour or 3/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons sifted cake flour
1 cup sugar
7 Tablespoons cocoa (or 2-1/2 oz. chocolate, melted; use 1/2 cup Spry instead of 2/3 cup)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
Now add:
2/3 cup shortening (1 cube oleo less 1″)
2 unbeaten eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup nuts
1 tablespoon corn syrup
Heat oven to 350 deg. Bake 40-45 minutes.
Error of 1 T cocoa in above recipe. Should be 7 T cocoa, per Spry’s 20th Anniversary Cookbook
Oops… fixed, thank you! Looks like I just misread the card!
